San Juan Capistrano Mission was the 7th California Mission to be founded, and it has a lot of history behind it besides being the most beautiful of the Mission ruins. It was first established in October 1775, by Father Lasuen, but abandoned because of trouble with the Indians. Father Junipero Serra then took over on November 1, 1776, founded the msssion,naming it St. John of Capistrano, who was an Italian Theologian and inquisitor of the 14th Century. Capistrano had everything going for it from the beginning, with a prime location tn the lovely valley with a pleasant climate. The ground gave an abundance of crops; grains, vegetables fruits, and fat cattle, grazing on the hills. Soon there were storehpuses, shops and barracks. They were all built around a quadrangle so big that it could hold all of the mission Indians and their belongings. This was a welcomed feature in case of Indian raids. Capistrano prospered and grew, and grew and out grew the original adobe church. In 1796 work began on a big stone structure, under the direction of a master Mexican Mason. After 9 years of hard work the cathedral like church, which was built mainly by Indian laborers was complete. It was an imposing edifice. The design was Cruciform; 108 feet long by 40 feet wide. It had a vaulted ceiling which surmounted 7 domess... and at the entrance, visible for at least ten (10) miles was the magnificent 120 ft. Bell Tower. The church served well for only 6 yrs. At the end of a morning service in December 1812, there was a deep rumble, a cacaphonic jangle of the bells and then the roar of an Earthquake, dumping concrete ceiling on the many helpless worshippers. These are now the most graceful ruins in the mission system., as only the sanctuary remains intact. The swallows migration each year on the day of St Joseph, is like clockwork. Every Spring the cliff swallows build gourd like, mud and saliva nests there to shelter their new brood. This adds to the mellow atmosphre and beauty of today's Mission San Juan Capistrano~
